Professor H. I. Latifee currently serves as the Adviser to the Yunus Centre, the global hub for Social Business initiatives founded by Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. A distinguished academic and development leader, he previously served as Professor of Economics at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, where he was also Chairman of the Department of Economics (1991–1994) and Proctor of the University (1988–1991).
In January 1994, Professor Latifee joined Grameen Trust (GT) as Managing Director and continued until December 2016. During his tenure, he provided transformative leadership in establishing and implementing over 151 Grameen replication programs across 41 countries, extending the reach of the Grameen microcredit model to empower millions globally.
He also pioneered the New Entrepreneur Program (NEP) in 2013, an innovative initiative designed to tackle youth unemployment and promote socially responsible entrepreneurship. With extensive expertise in microfinance, social business, and international development, he has led numerous training programs, monitoring missions, and fact-finding visits in countries including Brazil, China, Kosovo, Bahrain, the United States, and Timor-Leste.
Professor Latifee serves on the boards of several microfinance and social business organizations in Bangladesh and abroad. A prolific author, his works continue to guide development practitioners and policymakers worldwide.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to social and economic advancement, Business Week honored him with the “Stars of Asia Award” in 2001. He remains a devoted collaborator of Professor Muhammad Yunus in their shared mission to build a world free from poverty and unemployment.
